There are two fun SHCC events going on this week, and we hope you’ll be able to come to both! Here’s the scoop:
See the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter as it happens. One telescope will be available; feel free to bring whatever magnifiying devices you have.
Ask an Atheist at August ArtWalk on Thursday, August 21, 2014, 5:00pm – 8:00pm, at the corner of Lee St. and Capitol St., Charleston, WV.
Downtown Charleston ArtWalk is a monthly event in our capitol where folks are invited to peruse art by local artists, browse the wares of unique local businesses, and socialize over wine and beer. It’s a great way to meet people and take in the sounds and sights of downtown Charleston.
In August, the Charleston Secular Humanist Community Center will have volunteers placed throughout the ArtWalk area inviting people to “Ask an Atheist”, an opportunity that many may not have in their day-to-day lives. Our hope is that the exposure to an often maligned and misunderstood group will not only foster brotherhood but also bring some insight to all involved. They will also be passing out literature about our organization and atheism in general.
In addition to this action, the Charleston SHCC will also have a spot at the corner of Lee and Capitol street where volunteers will be creating customizable t-shirts. The t-shirts will have the words “I believe in” emblazoned across the front. Participants may choose to add the words Independence, Reason, Peace, Humanity, and Equality in the color of their choosing. We may not all believe in god but there are some values that unite us as human beings.
There will be a variety of colors and sizes of t-shirts available, and all t-shirts will be seeing a second life as they were purchases from local Goodwill stores. All t-shirts will be $10, and the profits will go towards funding the various activities of the Charleston SHCC, a non-profit secular organization aimed at providing social and intellectual events and services in a secular context.
