In the spirit of our recent guest post from Jim Spence, we thought we’d post a reminder of the truth about how bad atheists really are…
Self-identified atheists comprise only %0.07 of the percentage of US federal prison inmates.
And how many prisoners self-identify as Christian? 80%.
This information comes from the letter dated July 5, 2013 and received by Hemant Mehta from the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons, in response to his request for information about the stated religious faiths of prisoners. See the letter at Mehta’s blog, The Friendly Atheist (toward the end of the blog post).
I calcuated the 80% figure myself, totaling up the sums for Adventist, Catholic, Church of Christ, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Nontrinitarian, Orthodox, Pentecostal, Protestant, and Christian Science.
So, the lesson we can take away from this is, You should come join us for our potluck on Saturday, because we atheists (and folks of related stripes, such as humanists, agnostics, skeptics, etc.) are really not as bad as the general public makes us out to be!
