Sometimes people ask us, “If your group is non-religious, then what holds you together?” That’s a great question. Our shared value of community is what holds us together. We chose the term “secular humanist” for our name because it clearly describes what our group is: secular, meaning non-religious; and humanist, meaning that we value and focus on human life.

Also, in our unique structure, the core group of SHCC members who believe in the whole purpose of what we’re doing are like the hub of a wheel, while the varied sub-groups, where most of the action happens, are like the spokes. Members of sub-groups may or may not be interested in the SHCC as a whole, and that’s just fine—because, in a nutshell, the SHCC exists to serve people!
