Modern Dialogues, the SHCC Debate Group, aims to build skills in logical argument and formal debate from an academic perspective. As academic debating is less about passion and more about structure and technique, participants are encouraged to argue positions with which they may not agree. Of course, that doesn’t mean the topics will be mild and inoffensive; we fully intend to deal with some of the more divisive issues facing our state and our nation. Previous experience with formal debating is probably useful but not necessary. As a participant, you’ll be fully apprised of the structure and content of the debate with plenty of time to prepare.
If you are interested in joining the group, have ideas for future debates, or have any other feedback, please email us and we’ll get you in touch with the group leader.
